The Grand Canal, the Dublin southside waterway outlining the tree lined sidewalks darting in between high-rise apartments and office buildings.

The Grand Canal area is a completely different part of a type of Dublin you would never imagine. It’s the energetic hub of creative ideas, productive enterprises developing their next ground breaking project and fast-paced business people ordering sushi from Kokoro or deli sandwiches from Donnybrook Fair.

Of course, you will get some snooty, up their own sort of people here. Mostly, though, you have individuals who are trying to jumpstart their career and make friends in the process.

Places of interest is definitely the Dublin 4 area. The picture above lies parallel with Mespil Road which is a great place to start. You’ll even pop into Patrick Kavanagh sitting on the bench. He’s a grand lover of the canal and you will be too once you begin your adventure.

So visit the Grand Canal and bring a snack. The ducks will love you.

excerpt of
Canal Bank Walk
by Patrick Kavanagh

Leafy-with-love banks and the green waters of the canal
Pouring redemption for me, that I do
The will of God, wallow in the habitual, the banal,
Grow with nature again as before I grew.
